Antarctica -Deception Island and More Penguins 🐧 (crossing the Drake)

TUESDAY

Today we visited Deception Island. The island is located in the South Shetland Islands and it s caldera of an active volcano. You can reach your hand into the sand and the sand is actually warm due to the underlying volcanic activity.

Notice the narrow opening called Neptune’s Bellows. The island is 10 miles wide and we spent time in Whaler’s Bay. While in the bay, there was a strong sulfur smell. Due to erupt, the volcano last erupted in the 1960’s. The remains of a whaling camp can be seen on shore.

Chinstrap Penguins

After returning to the ship, our boots had to be cleaned to prevent the spread of avian influenza (bird flu).

Half Moon Island and More Penguins

Soooooo windy 🌬️

Scallops for Dinner

All locked down in anticipation of traveling through the Drake.

Shout-out to Caleb and Natalia P. - the first two days and last two days of our ship journey is spent crossing the Drake. The distance is about 600 miles.  On average, the depth is about 11,150 feet. So many people are experiencing motion sickness 🀒 Fortunately, I am not …. It’s like being on one long roller coaster 🎒 Waves 🌊 are ranging 12-15 feet in height.

Shout-out to Mackenzie- As far as which guest has travelled the farthest, it is probably a guest from Austria πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή He is a friend of one of the naturalists.

Shout-out to Andrew and Andre -We covered quite a bit of territory on this journey. One highlight is that we crossed over into the Southern Ocean, meaning we went below 60 degrees south. Take a look at the map πŸ—Ί️ below

Shout-out to Sara- I have purchased very few souvenirs. I bought two patches ( maybe πŸ€” I will put them on a jacket or on my backpack) and penguin earrings. We have a brief stop in Ushuaia on the way back home… I hope 🀞🏽 to purchase a few items then. The truth is I am bringing back lots of pictures and videos.

Do you want to see penguins swimming underwater?  Check out this video captured by the naturalists on board our ship.

An early Christmas πŸŽ„ dinner, Filipino style πŸ₯°

MONDAY

And icebergs…

Loading Zodiacs

Some Hot Chocolate Pirates 🏴‍☠️ commandeered our Zodiac…

Leopard Seal 🦭

Antarctic Shags

Shout-outs to Natalie, Tyler, Diego, Josh, Eli, Colby, Sariah, Josue, Leyli, Hailey, and Aanya- I saw πŸ‘€ a total of three types of penguins 🐧 We saw Adelie, Gentoo, and Chinstrap penguins 🐧. They spend their time on rocks and while grouped together they are called a rookery. Notice the pink stripes in the snow ❄️ as they climb up the sides of rocks. The pink is from the krill they eat and poop out.

Shout-out to James- I did see some baby Shags. They’re nests are perched on rocks above the water. I could see the babies but my camera was not good enough to capture the picture.

Shout-out to Chrislany- There are many hazards when traveling around Antarctica πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ά. The windchill was really tricky but my orange jacket really helped. The Zodiacs zip around quite fast but the drivers are very careful. The Drake Passage can be dangerous but summer isn’t too bad. High waves 🌊 make people feel very sick 🀒

Shout-out to Finn and Calliope- There are about 120 guests on the ship and 90 crew members. The name of the captain is Yuri. He is originally from Ukraine πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

Shout-out to Cortland- YES!! I did the Polar Plunge πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά. Many people did the plunge. They had loud music 🎢 playing and a warm drink when you came back in the ship. I thought I went really deep but I didn’t. I popped out of that water so quickly πŸ₯ΆπŸ€£πŸ₯Ά

I earned a patch for completing it.

Shout-out to Alana- Every day there are different talks on different topics. I attended one talk on pinnipeds. Pinnipeds are marine mammals with fins or flippers… such as sea lions 🦭 and seals. We have seen many Weddell seals, one elephant seal, crabeater seals, and one leopard seal. Most of these seals eat krill but they will also eat penguins 🐧

Shout-out to Serenity- On this trip we saw minke whales, orcas, and humpback πŸ‹ whales. Humpback whales were the most common. They are 56 feet in length, breed every 2-3 years and they eat krill. Their major predators are orcas and humans. Check out this photo…

Just for fun...porpoising penguins...

Prospect Point and Fish Islands

Adelie penguins 🐧

Skua bird

Dinner

With lamb …

And cheesecake…

Shout-out to Natalia S. - I am very proud of the picture I took of the Skua. It’s very difficult 😣 to take bird πŸ¦… pictures without a fancy camera. Skuas are aggressive predators. This one was behaving itself.

Shout-out to Maximus- The logistics of supplying a ship πŸ›³️ with ALL the supplies they need for 10 days is complicated. There is NO place to stop for supplies if we run low or if something was forgotten. Everything is loaded up in Ushuaia and everything is unloaded in Ushuaia. This includes all waste, too.
