Antarctic Shags

Shout-outs to Natalie, Tyler, Diego, Josh, Eli, Colby, Sariah, Josue, Leyli, Hailey, and Aanya- I saw πŸ‘€ a total of three types of penguins 🐧 We saw Adelie, Gentoo, and Chinstrap penguins 🐧. They spend their time on rocks and while grouped together they are called a rookery. Notice the pink stripes in the snow ❄️ as they climb up the sides of rocks. The pink is from the krill they eat and poop out.

Shout-out to James- I did see some baby Shags. They’re nests are perched on rocks above the water. I could see the babies but my camera was not good enough to capture the picture.

Shout-out to Chrislany- There are many hazards when traveling around Antarctica πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ά. The windchill was really tricky but my orange jacket really helped. The Zodiacs zip around quite fast but the drivers are very careful. The Drake Passage can be dangerous but summer isn’t too bad. High waves 🌊 make people feel very sick 🀒

Shout-out to Finn and Calliope- There are about 120 guests on the ship and 90 crew members. The name of the captain is Yuri. He is originally from Ukraine πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦

Shout-out to Cortland- YES!! I did the Polar Plunge πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά. Many people did the plunge. They had loud music 🎢 playing and a warm drink when you came back in the ship. I thought I went really deep but I didn’t. I popped out of that water so quickly πŸ₯ΆπŸ€£πŸ₯Ά

I earned a patch for completing it.

Shout-out to Alana- Every day there are different talks on different topics. I attended one talk on pinnipeds. Pinnipeds are marine mammals with fins or flippers… such as sea lions 🦭 and seals. We have seen many Weddell seals, one elephant seal, crabeater seals, and one leopard seal. Most of these seals eat krill but they will also eat penguins 🐧

Shout-out to Serenity- On this trip we saw minke whales, orcas, and humpback πŸ‹ whales. Humpback whales were the most common. They are 56 feet in length, breed every 2-3 years and they eat krill. Their major predators are orcas and humans. Check out this photo…

Just for fun...porpoising penguins...
